DR. MARVIN FOLKERTSMA: TRACKING AMERICA’S SUICIDE

In 2011, two American heroes saved a young child from further torture at the hands of an Afghan soldier. The two Green Berets were faced with inexcusable acts that pitted them against local officials in a classic episode involving a clash of civilizations. So why are the heroes being punished and possibly discharged against their will?

In this must-read article, Dr. Marvin Folkertsma recounts the event and argues that a dangerous ideology is the true enemy. A reigning ideology that is “a witch’s brew of moral relativism that over the past two generations has morally castrated Western civilization by expunging efforts to make principled judgments defending our values.”

DENNIS PATRICK: ENJOYING THE FIT LIFE!

As autumn weather beckons folks are ready to embark on one more physical fitness fling before winter. The over-50 crowd feel like a million bucks and want to prove it. Funny how the mind says “I feel like a kid again” but the body says “Give me a break!”

Time to get moving!

As aerobic fitness improves, three things stand out. First, you may need to recalculate your TARGET heart rate higher as your CR system becomes more efficient. Second, your resting heart rate may begin to drop. This, too, reflects a more efficient CR system. A normal resting heart rate should be between 60 and 100 bpm. And, third, you will recover your resting heart rate from the peak of your target heart rate in less time immediately following exercise.

You may discover other pleasing side effects as well. Your muscle tone will improve and your weight will be redistributed as your muscles strengthen and you control your food intake. All of this contributes to a healthy sense of well-being.

SELWYN DUKE: WHAT REALLY DRIVES OBAMA’S DESTRUCTIVE MIDEAST POL

It’s not a stretch to say that what ex-president Jimmy Carter did for Iran, Barack Obama is doing for the whole Middle East and beyond. Islamic State is on the move; jihadism in general is raging and all the rage; and with the Iran deal, the man who helped enable the “Arab Spring” may give us a nuclear winter.

A Mideast policy with such results has befuddled many. Why did Obama help overthrow Muammar Gaddafi and hurl Libya into turmoil? Why did he throw Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak under the bus? And why, as radio host Michael Savage asked late last week, does he have such a “vendetta” against Syria’s Bashar al-Assad?

DAVID J. AYERS: TETHERED TO TECHNOLOGY—ESCAPING THE IT TRAP

Technology is a beneficial and important part of our daily lives at work. But are we using technology or is it using us? As a society, have we become electronically tethered to our jobs? In this must-read article, Dr. David J. Ayers looks at the 24/7 use of technology and argues that it “undermines our energy, our motivation, our creativity, our joy, and ultimately, our ability to contribute positively to our workplaces.”

DENNIS PATRICK: LOOK GOOD; FEEL GOOD; STAY HEALTHY

Health considerations typically gain attention. Everyone is aware that excess weight increases the risk of serious health problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, various forms of cancer, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea and arthritis to name a few. Excess weight doesn’t guarantee these problems, of course. Other elements such as lack of physical activity and family history also contribute to the health risk calculus. Still, at the end of the day, how much excess body fat is carried will greatly influence physical health and mental well-being.

The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is one of the best ways to establish a personal healthy weight. Calculate your WHR as follows. Measure your waist by wrapping a tape around your bare abdomen about an inch below the lowest rib. Don’t suck in your gut, but do exhale before measuring. Men have cause for concern when the waist is greater than 40 inches. For women the upper limit is 35 inches.

Findings from both studies confirmed that folks with a larger waist were much more likely to die prematurely than folks with a more slender waist regardless of BMI. As might be expected, a solid correlation also exists between a large WHR and premature death. In either case, exceeding the benchmarks of BMI or WHR should be cause for a review of diet and exercise habits.

ALLAN C. BROWNFELD: POPE FRANCIS’S INTROSPECTION ABOUT CAPITALISM

It has been said by some of his critics that Pope Francis does not understand capitalism, having grown up in Peronist Argentina. This may be true.

But it is also true that the economic system which is now a way of life in our own country is not exactly free enterprise as the proponents of that philosophy, going back to Adam Smith, envisioned it.

We have embarked upon a far different enterprise -- bailing out failed banks and auto-makers, subsidizing farmers and sugar producers with taxpayer dollars -- so that when it is criticized, it is difficult for those who believe in genuine capitalism not to agree.

CHRISTOPHER MANION: WILL OUR BISHOPS CONFRONT THE REAL NATIVISTS?

While bishops assail critics of unlimited illegal immigration as xenophobes, bigots, and nativists, they will do nothing to stop the work of their largest worldwide partner, the eugenicist, pro-abortion U.S. Government monolith called the Agency for International Development, known as A.I.D.

Many bishops have called on Congress to stop funding Planned Parenthood with taxpayer funding. Why can't the bishops call on Congress to defund A.I.D., a rich, defiant, and brazen ally of Planned Parenthood?

The answer is simple. The bishops receive no funding from Planned Parenthood, but they receive hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars a year from A.I.D. for their "charitable work."

The elitists at A.I.D. are the cultural heirs of Margaret Sanger and Alice DuPont Mills. Our bishops need to direct their stinging rebukes at those enemies of the unborn, not at the faithful who love life, their Church, and their country.

DENNIS PATRICK: I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY SAID THAT

Think back in time. Remember when Vice President Dan Quayle committed a faux pas and misspelled “potato” using an “e”?

Then there was “Dubya.” George W. Bush was constantly portrayed by the media-generated narrative as really stupid. That he graduated from Yale (BA) and Harvard (MBA) didn’t matter. Nor did it matter that his analytical speed was lightning fast or that he enjoyed a superb memory.

With campaign season upon us it is time to spread the wealth around so to speak.

PATRICK BUCHANAN: CHINA, THE DONALD, AND A NEW NATIONALISM

The crisis in world markets seems related not only to a sinking Chinese economy, but also to what Beijing is saying to the world; i.e., China will save herself first even if it means throwing others out of the life boat.

To Trump, the world is not Davos; it is the NFL. He is appalled at those mammoth container ships in West Coast ports bringing in Hondas and Toyotas. Those ships should be carrying American cars to Asia.

Whatever becomes of Trump the candidate, Trumpism, i.e., economic and foreign policy nationalism, appears ascendant.

DENNIS PATRICK: IMMIGRATION OR INVASION?

In late December 406 AD hundreds of thousands of starving men, women and children gathered on the east bank of the Rhine River in what is now Germany. This was the moment they had waited for. The Rhine had frozen solid providing a natural bridge into the Roman-held lands and the promise of food and a better life. Then the Vandals, as they were known, flooded accross the river.

For the United States, no immigration laws are being enforced. There is no protocol. Invaders flow into the United States through very porous borders. This is now our standing policy. The Obama Doctrine has been to suspend immigration law and enforcement of the immigration process. This is his legacy.

We do not face an immigration crisis. Like the old Roman Empire, we face an invasion.

The big news out of San Francisco last week was that it would register another first: a city elementary school is going to switch to all “gender-neutral” bathrooms. The idea is, as the Daily Mail put it, to “accommodate young students who don’t fit into gender norms.” Of course, this apparently means that normal students who might like those supposedly antiquated single-sex bathrooms can just go to Hell (I mean, the Hell that isn’t San Francisco).

DENNIS PATRICK: CHANGING AMERICA THROUGH CLIMATE CHANGE

“We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” – Barack Obama, Election Eve, October 30, 2008.

Manmade climate change holds less and less credibility. The use of manmade climate change to shape public policy has become scandalous. The collaborative snow job by global warming champions has been successfully challenged time and again over the past few years.

The next UN Climate Change Conference will be held December 2015 in Paris. The purpose is to achieve a legally binding universal agreement on climate from all the nations of the world. At that time President Obama will pledge $3 billion to the UN Green Climate Fund adding to our $18 trillion debt.

We still have fifteen months of the Obama regime left for him to follow through on his pledge to fundamentally transform the United States of America.
